Videos - Traffic Junctions - Turning right off main road - Right turn at traffic lights - Turning Right - Major to Minor (Diagrams)

There are many different types of junction. You need to be able to safely negotiate any junction on any type of road without holding up other traffic unnecessarily.

To do this you need to confidently deal with ...

T-junctions and Y-junctions - you need to make sure you position yourself so that you get the best view of the road into which you're turning
crossroads - always check who has priority as you approach a crossroads and be aware of the movement of any other traffic
sliproads - these are there to help you match your speed to that of the traffic on the main road
unmarked junctions - be cautious as no one has priority here
junctions on all types of roads - urban and rural roads, dual carriageways and one-way streets

To understand the rules for dealing with junctions you need to be aware of the ...

MSM and PSL routines
rules for turning at, entering into and emerging from a junction. These include the need to position your car correctly, adjust your speed and stop if necessary
significance of advance warning signs and road markings and acting correctly on what you see
rules of priority, especially when dealing with unmarked junctions
importance of good observation

What if a pedestrian is crossing the road into which I am turning? You should be checking as you approach the turning. A pedestrian who has already started to cross has priority, so give way. They might not have seen you.

How can I improve my view of the road into which I'm turning? Sometimes buildings, hedges, bends in the road or parked cars can obscure your view. Edge forward slowly until you can see the road clearly before you pull out.

In a one way street. move into the correct lane as soon as you can do so safely.

When approaching a junction make sure that you slow down in good time so that you don't have to break harshly if you need to stop.

Watch out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists when you're turning. They're not as easy to see as large vehicles.
